Havant M2 v Salisbury 1

Craig Duffy

Hardworking Havant get deserved win!

The boys made the long away day to Salisbury on Saturday brimming with confidence on the back of a dominant performance against a strong Alton side the prior week.

Havant started the match on the front foot as ever with a few early chances with some wins high up the pitch from the forwards. Salisbury clearly came with a game plan of soaking up the oncoming Havant pressure and looking to play quick on the break with some promising attacks eventually being snuffed out by the rock solid Havant defence.

Havant soon after broke the deadlock 30 minutes into the first half from a lightening fast counter after a brilliant carry and shot from Theo Gardener rebounding off the keeper with Oli Street in the right place at the right time to slot home from close range putting the boys 1-0 to the good. This was almost undone a couple of minutes after with a good drag from Salisbury’s flicker unable to get past the immovable object of Tim Canning pulling out a fantastic goal-line stop to keep Havant’s lead alive going into the break.

After some encouraging words from Coach Craig Duffy at half-time, Havant started the second half looking to put Salisbury under even greater pressure and open the flood gates for more goals. Some brilliant attacking play and dribbling from the likes of Lucas Matthews and George Baker led to an influx of Havant short corners throughout the second half. Giving credit where it’s due the Salisbury keeper made some fantastic saves from Jonathon Picketts keeping the score at 1-0.

Havant’s defensive work rate proved vital in the latter stages, stifling Salisbury’s attempts to play forward. Big wins in midfield from the ever-present Sam Watson and Liam Matthews ensured the narrow victory was seen out calmly, with the Havant goalkeeper a spectator in the second half.

Not a dominant score line, but nevertheless a passionate performance away from home to keep the lads at the top of the table making it 10 from 10!
